Tom Kundig, Architect
Tom Kundig of Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects is the winner of the 2008 Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award in Architecture, as well as 25 American Institute of Architects awards.
Hailed for his seamless integration of architecture and landscape, he pays uniquely meticulous attention to detail and the materials used, often leaving them in their natural, raw state. His ingenuity lies in the experiential nature of his work, the use of kinetic architectural features and the reinvention of structural elements that are often overlooked, such as doors, windows and stairs.
In developing the Seattle Candela Hotel & Residences project Tom drew on environmental factors, both man-made and natural, to create a building that would be iconic but also in harmony with its location. "I was inspired by the form of a tree, and how it seems to aesthetically adapt to its environment,"explains Tom. "At the base, trees have a human scale, more texture and shadow line; then they begin to branch out and morph around neighboring structures before rising up to capture light and air."
The overall design approach will give Seattle's Candela Hotel & Residences a feeling of authenticity and belonging. "My goal was to capture the essence of the Pacific Northwest. Inside, guests and residents will find comfortable elegantly clean spaces, with windows and viewpoints designed to frame the natural landscape and breathe in light and air." Tom's signature "experiential architecture," will be woven throughout, providing pause and contemplative delight in often overlooked places.
Raised in the Pacific Northwest, Tom has garnered recognition for projects ranging from small cabins to high-rise buildings. He has been featured in countless publications, including the international release of the Princeton Architectural Press book, "Tom Kundig's: Houses"
